- Description
- Hopkins tells E. W. K. Willson, of the Standard Homes Company in Dallas, that his letter of 13 November is not quite fair in implying that any new or unprecedented situation exists, because within Hopkins's knowledge there had never been any considerable lapse of time at Dartmouth when there was not a Black athlete on one of the teams. He recalls Johnny Overton, the intercollegiate half-mile champion and a Southerner, conceding a race to Dartmouth's Granger with his hand outstretched, and notes that Harvard had recently refused West Point's request to remove Matthews from its baseball team. The status of a Black student at Dartmouth, he writes, is his status at practically every college north of the Mason-Dixon line except Princeton and Yale. He closes by observing that if the time has come to change, the new attitude will be the innovation and not the old one. See all items with this value
