Dartmouth 250 Generations of Community

Commissioned in response to José Clemente Orozco’s The Epic of American Civilization, these murals have rarely been displayed publicly since the 1970s because of their offensive and inaccurate depictions of Native Americans.

The Wearers of the Green program honors alumni who have achieved athletic excellence in their sport.

For over a century, Winter Carnival has drawn crowds to campus for competitions, performances, and parties. This 1923 program includes some condescending instructions “for the carnival girl”.

Individual contributions – such as this guarantee of $15 by James Norman Kittle ’24 – enabled the College to erect Memorial Field in 1923 in memory of the Dartmouth students and alumni who died serving in World War I.

This survey illustrates national fraternities’ exclusionary membership clauses that led many Dartmouth chapters to break their national affiliation and “go local”.
